In a normal tournament, more chips almost always means more equity. In a satellite where every seat pays the same, that logic breaks. Once you have enough to lock a seat, extra chips are close to worthless.
This single fact flips much of your usual strategy. The correct play near a satellite bubble often looks absurdly tight to a player used to regular tournaments, and that discomfort is exactly where the edge lives.
When the top finishers all win the same seat, doubling up rarely helps and busting is catastrophic. A chip lead does not buy you a bigger prize. It only buys you the freedom to fold.

Satellites punish ego. The urge to make a hero call or a stylish bluff is exactly what busts players one spot from a seat they had already won.
The skill is not fancy. It is folding hands you would normally play, calmly, because the format rewards patience over bravery.
Played well, satellites let you turn a small buy-in into a seat in an event you could not otherwise afford. That makes satellite skill one of the highest-value edges in tournament poker.
It is also one of the least studied, which is exactly why disciplined satellite play is so profitable.
